  4.                   INFORMATION ABOUT THE PGG MOTHERSHIP
  5.  
  6. This file contains information on how to acquire Project Galactic Guide
  7. materials, including:
  8.  
  9.    o The alt.galactic-guide FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) info file
  10.    o PGG article archive collections (the *.NEW files)
  11.    o Information about the PGG T-Shirt design(s) and images
  12.    o Article reader programs for IBM/DOS, Unix, X Windows, Atari,
  13.        Amiga, and Acorn Archimedes computer platforms
  14.    o Hitchhiker's Guide fan stuff (like those two THHG/Star Trek
  15.        cross-over scripts, plus gif images and other fun stuff)

  18. How to reach and use the FTP site:
  19. ----------------------------------
  20. From your favorite FTP/Internet gateway (once you're on-line, etc.):
  21.  
  22. 1) Connect to Oakland University's Vela system:
  23.  
  24.           Lexical:   [ ftp vela.acs.oakland.edu ]
  25.           Numeric:   [ ftp 141.210.10.2 ]
  26.  
  27.    (you only need to use one of these methods; some people can't use
  28.    the lexical address and need the numeric ID instead...)
  29.  
  30. 2) If you can not connect, or do not have FTP access, then email me your
  31.    email address and what you want, and I will (try to) send it to you
  32.    (i.e., the uuencoded versions of program files, and/or the PGG article
  33.    archive files, etc).
  34.  
  35.    Login to the system:
  36.  
  37.           Syntax:    [ login anonymous ]
  38.  
  39.    and then enter your full email address as your password.
  40.  
  41. 3) Go to the desired directory (see below for a detailed listing):
  42.  
  43.           Syntax:    [ cd <directory> ]
  44.  
  45.    Once you're in the desired directory, display a file listing:
  46.  
  47.           Syntax:    [ dir ]
  48.  
  49. 4) Be sure you are in BINARY mode: a lot of folks have been sending me
  50.    email complaining of corrupt .ZIP files, etc... it's because they
  51.    are trying to get the binary file in ASCII mode (which is the
  52.    default, unfortunately).
  53.  
  54.    You only need to type this once, but you MUST type this EVERY TIME
  55.    you login to the FTP system.
  56.  
  57.           Syntax:    [ binary ]
  58.  
  59.    In summary, ALWAYS TYPE [ binary ] BEFORE YOU [ get ... ] ANYTHING!!!

  61. 5) Get the file(s) you want:
  62.  
  63.           Syntax:    [ get <filename.extension(s)> ]
  64.  
  65.    Note that you can always change into another directory (detailed
  66.    above) and get more stuff if you want.

  68. 6) When you're satisfied, logout of Oakland's FTP system:
  69.  
  70.           Syntax:    [ bye ]

  73. Directories on the PGG Mothership:

  77.      This is the place to look for the latest and greatest in articles
  78.      and other important Project Galactic Guide stuff.
  79.  
  80.      NOTE: The directory /pub/galactic-guide is a "link" or pointer to
  81.            the physical directory /pub/swbaker.  I happen to think that
  82.            a directory named galactic-guide seems to make more sense than
  83.            one named swbaker, so that's why the link is there.
  84.  
  85.            If you don't see /pub/galactic-guide with your FTP server or
  86.            WWW system, try /pub/swbaker instead.
  87.  
  88.      Currently, the following article archive files are on-line, each
  89.      containing up to 25 articles (the current quantity standard):

  106.      This directory contains general PGG information files, like the
  107.      alt.galactic-guide Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) file, and info
  108.      on formatting your own text articles for submission to PGG.

  112.      Here's where you'll find all of the article archives in PK-ZIP
  113.      format.  Everything is in ARTICLES.ZIP, and monthly updates (which
  114.      are included in ARTICLES.ZIP) are available for convienent upgrades.

  117.  
  118.      This directory has the pure ASCII copies of recently-approved PGG
  119.      articles.  If you're interested in an article on a specific topic,
  120.      this is the place to look!

  122. pub/galactic-guide/theguide

  124.      The Guide! for DOS is one of the pioneer reader systems of PGG lore.
  125.      Requirements are an IBM-compatable 286/386/486/Pentium? system, and
  126.      Ega/Vga color and hard drives are recommended but not required.
  127.      A mouse is supported but is also not required.
  128.  
  129.      This sub-directory contains The Guide!-specific files, like the
  130.      latest program and executable filese, the complete archives 
  131.      pre-processed and ready for use, icons for OS/2, and other support
  132.      and dox files.

  134. pub/galactic-guide/Xguide
  135.  
  136.      The X Windows Project Galactic Guide article reader system.  In
  137.      this sub-directory are installation files as well as text readme
  138.      information files.

  140.      NOTE: This stuff is the source code which needs to be compiled on
  141.      a unix system which has X, and, most importantly, the Modif widget
  142.      libraries.

  145.  
  146.      This is the sub-directory containing The Unix Guide (TUG!), code,
  147.      dox, and support information.  A new alpha release of TUG! (version
  148.      2.1.1pl1) is available in the /pub/galactic-guide/tug/alpha
  149.      subdirectory.

  153.      This contains another cool Project Galactic Guide system, The Atari
  154.      Guide (TAG!).  The files here are 'stgde101.zoo' (the binary archive
  155.      file containing the programs and documentation) and 'stgde101.zoo.UU'
  156.      (the ASCII uuencoded version of the file).

  160.      A new addition to PGG lore, this is a scripting system to use
  161.      the AmigaGuide-based system with PGG articles.  Both the binary
  162.      .lha archives and the ASCII uuencoded versions of the .lha files
  163.      can be found in here.

  167.      This is where you will find an article-reader system for the Amiga
  168.      computer systems.  Both the .lha archive and the uuencoded version
  169.      of the .lha file can be found here.

  174.      In this directory you will find your article reader system in the
  175.      ever-popular uuencoded spark file format, ready for transfer.  Enjoy!
